The long history of lacquer engraving in Tianshui can be traced back to over 2000 years ago. Its lacquer wares are in 10 categories with over 200 kinds of specifications, such as beds, deck chair, folding screen, tea table, dining table, bookshelf, tea tray, ashtray and souvenirs, which are world famous for the exquisite art of diversified styles, elaborated and beautiful grains, elegant moulds, vivid patterns and durability. The series products of cultural heritages and the art of Maiji Mountain Grottos are featured by antiquity, elegance, exquisiteness and lifelikeness, forming a unique pattern of Tianshui lacquer wares.

In recent years, the engraving techniques have been innovated and upgraded. Some folding screens are inlaid with thousands of small melon seed like mother-of-pearl which set off with the images of persons, birds, flowers and other cultural heritages carved in ivory and jade. The magnificent beauty with distinctive local characteristics is reflected on the lacquer ware.
